If you’ve been to a Mamahuhu mahjong party in the last year, you’ve met Nicole Wong, the master behind The Mahjong Project. At our events, she can usually be found running around from table to table teaching us newbies how to form a winning hand or flagging us down to bestow a Free Soft Serve ticket upon a winner. 


TLDR: she’s awesome, and has done so much to support Mahjong at Mamahuhu. And now she’s written her first book, Mahjong: House Rules From Across the Asian Diaspora, and we want to celebrate with her. By playing Mahjong, of course!


On Monday, May 12th (we can’t resist that Mahjong Monday alliteration), we’re hosting a very special book release-Mahj night in partnership with Green Apple Books. Your ticket includes a copy of Mahjong: House Rules from Across the Asian Diaspora, to be picked up at Green Apple Books (Inner Richmond location, 506 Clement St.) any time before or on the day of the event. We'll start off our evening on the 12th with a book signing with Nicole Wong at Green Apple, then head over to Mamahuhu Inner Richmond for some good eats and mahjong play. A full schedule for the evening is at the bottom of this page.

5:00 PM - 6:00 PMBook Signing at Green Apple Books

We begin our evening at Green Apple Books (506 Clement St., SF) where you can pick up your copy of Mahjong: House Rules from Across the Asian Diaspora and have them signed by Nicole. (P.S. - you can also pick up your book in advance if you want a head start!) Feel free to arrive any time between 5 and 6 and stay as long as you like before heading to Mamahuhu.

6:00 PM - 6:30 PMWalk to Mamahuhu + Dinner

After getting your book signed (and hopefully with arms full of other goodies from Green Apple), take the short walk across the street to Mamahuhu. Plates of rice and Broccoli Beef can get in the way when playing mahj, so now is a good time to order some dinner and eat up before the games begin. Nicole will make a quick introduction as well!

6:30 PM - 9:00 PMMahjong Time!

From 6:30-9, it'll be all things Mahjong. If you're an experienced player, feel free to find a few friends and get a game rolling. If you're new to Mahjong, no worries - Nicole and her team of Mahjong mavens will be giving instruction on how to play the game. We recommend ending the night with some soft serve, obviously.
